Course Description
Seeking to understand the cultural norms and values in society are key components to social science research. In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore a city outside of the U.S. and apply methodological approaches learned in the course. While studying abroad in the UAE, students will visit Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah and immerse themselves in the diverse culture of this newly developed urban Middle Eastern society. Students will have the opportunity to explore research questions related to culture, ethnicity, gender, religious belief or non-belief, and social class while participating in daily social and cultural excursion trips.
Moreover, this course supports students who are interested in conducting research. We will discuss the philosophical and ethical issues surrounding research, as well as the practical applications for engaging in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research method approaches. The course will also provide students with an understanding of how to critically read, evaluate and conduct a literature review. Drawing on coursework and professional interests, students will develop a research proposal on a topic of their choosing.
